Introduction

Mr. Ndongo is a well-known and respected politician, who has just left his party and therefore he wishes to start a new party in order to secure the future of South
Africa.

He is searching for young people, who are as enthusiastic as he is about changing the situation in the country. He has contacted you (a student at an international school), because he wants your help making this a reality since the
election is in summer 2009.

To get you started properly you are asked to do these following tasks.

Task 1

Before you can start to help mr. Ndongo you need to know some
more about the political background in South Africa.

You are therefore asked to find facts about the African National
Congress (ANC) and National Party (NP). You have to find out
when it was founded, who founded it and their most important courses.
To find this you need to go to these following webpages and look
in your booklet on South Africa.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_National_Congress
http://www.anc.org.za/show.php?doc=ancdocs/history/hisdocs1.html

After finding facts about the parties, you have to learn a bit more
about the South African history. You have to find out who ruled
South Africa from 1900 to today.

Make a timeline in word to get an overview of the period.
Go to these webpages to seek for answers or look in your booklet
on South Africa.

Task 2

If your party is going to gain respect in South Africa,
you have to show that you are able to put yourself in
both the white and black South African’s place. It is
very important to know your voters.

The well-known internet magazine ClickAfrique Magazine
have contacted you and asked if you would like to make a
contribution in the form of a readers letter
to their next issue.

This is a great chance for you to show that you are
able to symphasize with the South African people.

The magazine has a few requirements to your contribution.
You have to choose between writing about a white or
black South African’s everyday life taking their point of view
in the year 1950.
Furthermore you have to include these following topics
in your contribution.

• Economics
• Education
• ANC/NP
• Apartheid

You can use these links and your papers about
South Africa as a help.

Task 3

Mr Ndongo has some priority political topics. He wants you to get
acquainted with the situation of these topics as it is right now,
in order for you to help him with this new party.

The topics are: poverty, HIV/Aids and education.

The links below might help you find some information.

· Poverty

Be aware of the source of the links, not all of them have
the same opinion about the situation. It is up to you to
form your own opinion, based on the information you find.

Task 4

Now you are going to make a party platform for you party.
A party platform is where your party presents your opinions
and what your party stands for.

On this link there is a small description of what a party platform is:

http://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partiprogram

You are going to make your party platform in PowerPoint.
Remember to have two things in mind when you write your
program:

1. What is your party’s position on poverty, education, and Hiv/AIDS?
2. What is your party going to do to solve the problem?

Your presentation of your platform is going to be 10 minutes long,
so you only have to write the most important things in
your PowerPoint.

You also have to make a folder for the presentation so that the
other partys can remember what you stand for and who you are.
The folder needs to fill out an A4 page.

Here is a link to ANC’s platform for the next election, just as an inspiration:

Task 5

The electionday is approaching. Your new party has to
prepare a 10 minute presentation of your platform and
your ideologies, using power point.
To get your ideologies out to the voters, you also have to make
a folder about the party. Hand out the folder at the presentation.

Make sure that everybody in your group get to say something
at the presentation.

It turns out that Mr. Ndongo has asked other international
students about their ideas for a party platform.
They will be listening to your party platform as you will
be listening to their's as well.

You will all be competing about beeing THE group, whos ideas
Mr. Ndongo chose, so of course you have to make yourself look
good and the others look bad.

After the presentation of the different party platforms,
you will have the oppotunity to ask questions to the other
groups and their platforms.
